Where to Stay

Where to Stay in San Pedro de Atacama

The town center, the edge of town, the desert lodges and the budget beds, for travelers arriving by airport transfer.

Stay in central San Pedro de Atacama if this is your first visit, and especially if you arrive by airport transfer without a car. Restaurants, shops, tour offices and meeting points are all a short walk away, and the day tours collect from hotels in town. The edge of town buys you quiet and space, the desert lodges buy you pools and guides, and Calama, about 100 km away, only makes sense for a very late flight.

1. Central San Pedro

The center is a compact grid of adobe streets, about twelve blocks between Domingo Atienza and Toconao and between Licancabur and Caracoles. Caracoles is the main tourist street, and from a central hotel the restaurants, shops, exchange offices and tour agencies are a few minutes on foot. That matters more than it sounds. Tours start before dawn and end after dark, and in town you walk home from dinner without arranging a ride.

It is also where tour pickups are simplest. Some activities on this site don’t collect at all and start from an office in town: the Whipala Valle de la Luna shared tour leaves from its agency at Tocopilla 418 in the center, and the Llama Stargazing night tour meets at a set point in town.

Central hotels to look at:

  • Hotel La Casa de Don Tomás, on Tocopilla, with heated rooms, an outdoor pool and a buffet breakfast.
  • NOI Casa Atacama, a minute or two from the square, with a year-round pool, a spa and free bikes. Its listing also mentions an airport shuttle.
  • Hostal Mamatierra, a guesthouse about a 10-minute walk from the church.

The trade-off is noise and space. Rooms are smaller, and the streets near Caracoles stay busy into the evening.

2. Around the edge of San Pedro

Beyond the center, San Pedro spreads into ayllus, the farming hamlets around the oasis, such as Quitor, Larache and Checar. Hotels here have more room: gardens, bigger grounds and pools. Nights are darker and quieter.

The catch is distance. A walk to dinner can take 20 minutes on unlit dirt lanes, and tour pickups get patchy. Before you book a room out here, check two things: how far it is from the plaza, and whether the tours you want will collect you there.

3. Luxury desert hotels

If the hotel is part of the trip, look at the lodges. They sit in large grounds a short drive from the plaza, and several run their own guided excursions, so pickup zones stop being your problem.

  • Nayara Alto Atacama, in Ayllu de Quitor about 2.7 km out, with six thermal pools and its own observatory.
  • Explora en Atacama, in Ayllu de Larache, all-inclusive with guided excursions.
  • Awasi Atacama, in town at Tocopilla 551, with a private guide and vehicle for each suite.

Awasi is the one to choose if you want a luxury stay and still want to walk to Caracoles in the evening.

4. Budget accommodation

San Pedro has plenty of hostels and family-run guesthouses, many built around a patio with a shared kitchen. The budget rule is the same as for everyone else: stay central if you can. A cheap bed far out can cost you a taxi every evening, or a missed pickup at 4 a.m. Hostal Mamatierra in the center offers breakfast, a shared kitchen and some rooms with private bathrooms. The Checar guesthouses are quieter, but confirm tour pickup before you pay.

5. Best hotels if you don’t have a car

Most people reading this will arrive by transfer, and that is the situation this guide is built around. Without a car, your hotel decides how easy every day is. Pick one inside the urban area, close to Caracoles, and the evening walk to a restaurant, the stargazing meeting point and the dawn pickup for the geysers all take care of themselves.

On this site’s picks, that means Hotel La Casa de Don Tomás, NOI Casa Atacama or Hostal Mamatierra, or Awasi if your budget stretches. The edge-of-town hotels can work without a car, but only once you have confirmed tour pickups and you don’t mind a longer walk in the dark. Your airport transfer drops you at your accommodation in San Pedro; our Calama Airport to San Pedro transfer page covers booking, and the return transfer guide covers the trip back.

6. Check whether your tours collect from your hotel

This is where most booking mistakes happen when you choose where to stay in the Atacama Desert. Some tours collect only from central hotels, and others use a fixed meeting point in town. On the tours we list:

  • Best of Atacama: 4 Tours in 3 Days includes pickup from your accommodation, but not from accommodation outside the urban area of San Pedro.
  • The 4-Day Magic Desert Tour collects from centrally located hotels; if yours is outside the zone, the operator sends you a meeting point and time.
  • The Moon Valley shared tour and the stargazing tour above start from points in town.

Our things to do in San Pedro de Atacama guide lists each activity and its pickup. If you book an edge-of-town room anyway, send your exact address to every operator before you pay.

If your flight lands late, Calama is the fallback. The El Loa terminal is open 24 hours, but shared shuttles mostly cover arrivals until about 9 p.m., with a single late run for flights landing between 9 and 11 p.m. in high season. A private transfer still gets you to San Pedro that night. Sleeping in Calama means a second transfer the next day, and San Pedro’s tours don’t collect there.

Practical tips

  • Bring Chilean pesos from Calama. San Pedro has few ATMs, and they can run out of cash at weekends and in high season.
  • Desert nights are cold, below freezing in winter. Check that your room lists heating.
  • Send your exact hotel name and address with your transfer booking, along with your flight number.
  • San Pedro sits at about 2,400 m. Book a hotel you can walk around easily on your first slow day.
  • Book the tours first, then choose a hotel inside their pickup zones.

Quick recommendations

  • If it is your first visit and you have no car → stay in central San Pedro and book the Ruta Chile Calama Airport transfer to your door (our breakdown).
  • If you want quiet and space → an edge-of-town hotel such as Hotel Cumbres, after checking tour pickups.
  • If the hotel is the main event of the trip → Nayara Alto Atacama, Explora or Awasi.
  • If you land after 9 p.m. → book a private transfer, or as a last resort sleep in Calama.

Dean United Arab Emirates

"Collected from the arrivals hall with my name on a board, waited a few minutes for the other passenger and off we went! Seamless journey after a lot of travel"

Elena United Kingdom

"Booked a transfer from San Pedro to Calama airport. Communication was great and I was given a clear pickup window - they were punctual and got me to the airport in good time. Smooth journey and efficient service. Having done this by public bus a week before and had a not-so-great experience, this was much better for my stress levels when I had a flight to get!"

Sam United Kingdom

"Booked the round trip service. Communicated very far in advance for the pick up at Calama airport and was standing at the exit with a sign listing the names of all passengers that had booked with the transfer, then sorted us into groups and had us on the vans. Very efficient. Return transfer communication was not until 12 hours before our pickup time (early the next morning), but had all our information. Pick up was very early (get you to airport with 2 hours prior to boarding, which is not really necessary at such a small airport). However, met us at our hotel and even knocked on the door when ready to get us from the lobby. Drivers were fast and got us to our destination quickly. Buses are clean and modern, though limited leg room. An uber is probably cheaper if you are more than one person, but having this booked in advance gave good peace of mind."

Baily United States

"The trip was professional, safe and comfortable. Door to door service."

Hilary Jane Australia

"Efficient transfer to/from the airport, punctual, good communication, decent value, comfy vehicles. Good option for getting out to San Pedro"

"Smooth pickup. All other passengers were from the same flight, so we didn't wait too much. Hotel drop-off. Good communication throughout. 5 stars."
