The Experience

Why a Private Transfer Beats Hailing a Taxi

The same no-waiting ride as a taxi, booked before you fly, with a driver holding your name at the airport exit.

Highlights

  • No waiting for other passengers, since the vehicle is yours alone
  • Name-sign welcome at the CJC exit
  • About 1.5 hours between the airport and your San Pedro hotel
  • Runs in both directions
  • Operator with more than 20 years of experience

What's Included

  • Private transfer between El Loa Airport (CJC) and San Pedro de Atacama
  • Vehicle for you and your companions only
  • Driver waiting at the airport exit
  • Pickup or drop-off at your hotel in San Pedro de Atacama
  • Departure timed to your own flight

How the Private Transfer Works

Book with your flight details, meet the driver at the exit, and go straight to San Pedro.

  1. Book and send your details

Book online, then give the operator a contact cell phone, your flight number, arrival time and destination hotel.

  2. Meet your driver

At the airport exit the driver waits with a sign showing your name. The vehicle is for you and your companions only.

  3. Leave without waiting

No other flights to wait for and no other passengers. You set off for San Pedro, about 100 km away, as soon as you have your bags.

  4. Straight to your hotel

About 1 hour 30 minutes later you arrive in San Pedro. Cancel free of charge up to 24 hours before if your plans change.

Transfer vs Taxi

Transfer or Taxi From Calama Airport?

Price per person, waiting time and certainty, worked out for one to four travelers.

For one or two people, a transfer is the better deal from Calama Airport to San Pedro de Atacama: a shared seat costs CLP 17,900 at the counter or $29.90 online, while the official taxi fare is CLP 75,000 for the whole car. At four people the taxi comes out at CLP 18,750 each, almost level with a shared seat, and you leave without waiting for other passengers.

The numbers by group size

The authorized taxi fare is per vehicle; transfer seats are per person. Here is what each costs per head, using the airport’s published tariffs from 1 April 2026.

TravelersTaxi (CLP 75,000 per car)Counter shared seatOnline shared seat (3 Oct 2026)
1CLP 75,000 eachCLP 17,900$29.90
2CLP 37,500 eachCLP 17,900$29.90
3CLP 25,000 eachCLP 17,900$29.90
4CLP 18,750 eachCLP 17,900$29.90

The online prices are the Ruta Chile shared transfer when we checked on 3 October 2026 for two adults. We give the peso fares in pesos, so compare them in your own currency on the day you travel.

What the taxi gets you

The airport lists 41 registered taxi operators and publishes a fixed fare for the trip to San Pedro, so there is no meter to watch and no haggling at the rank. You leave as soon as you load your bags, with no other passengers and no stops at other hotels. For a group of three or four traveling light, that is a fast, private ride for not much more than four shared seats.

The limits are space and certainty. One car holds one party and whatever fits in the trunk, and you cannot reserve an airport taxi weeks ahead the way you can a transfer. Arriving late in the evening, you are relying on a taxi being free when you walk out. Ride-hailing apps are reported to be unreliable on this route, so they are no fallback. Our Calama Airport taxi page covers the rank and the fares into Calama town.

What a shared transfer gets you

A shared van is the cheapest door-to-door seat for one or two people. Three companies sell seats at counters right after baggage claim (Transfer Altiplánico, Transfer Pampa and Transvip) at CLP 17,900, or you can book online before you fly. The Ruta Chile transfer, rated 4.6 from 814 reviews, includes one suitcase and one carry-on per person, and the driver waits at the exit door with your name.

The cost is time. Shared vans often wait 30 to 50 minutes after landing to fill up, then stop at several hotels in San Pedro. See our shared transfer guide for how the waiting works.

Private transfer: the taxi you book in advance

A private transfer sits between the two. Like a taxi, the vehicle is yours alone and leaves when you are ready. Like a shared transfer, it is booked before you fly and the driver is waiting for you. The Ruta Chile private transfer cost $95 per person from the airport for two travelers when we checked on 3 October 2026, and $89 per person from San Pedro back to the airport. It is rated 4.8, though from only 8 reviews. Our private transfer breakdown explains what you need to send when you book.

Choose it when certainty matters more than the price: a late flight, small children, or a first trip to Chile where you would rather find your name on a sign than negotiate at a rank in Spanish.

The drive is the same either way

Whichever you pick, the road is Route 23, about 100 km and roughly 1 hour 30 minutes of driving according to Chile’s tourism board. The difference lies before and after the drive: a taxi or private transfer skips the wait at the airport and the hotel stops in town, which can save the best part of an hour on a busy afternoon. Our travel time guide breaks the door-to-door time down by mode.

Which to choose for your arrival

  • Midday arrival, one or two people: a shared seat, online or at the counter.
  • Midday arrival, three or four people with normal luggage: the taxi is quick and close in price per head.
  • Landing after about 9 pm: book ahead. Counter shuttles thin out in the late evening, and in high season some run a single shared departure for flights landing between about 9 and 11 pm.
  • Lots of luggage, ski or bike bags: a private transfer, and mention the extra bags when you book.

Practical tips

  • Carry pesos. The taxi fare and counter seats are priced in Chilean pesos, and there are ATMs in the terminal.
  • Use only the authorized taxis at the airport rank, which charge the published fare.
  • Send your flight number with any transfer booking so a delay does not cost you your ride.
  • Check whether your hotel is in the town center. Places outside it may be served from a set drop-off point by shared vans; a taxi or private transfer goes to the door.
  • Plan the return now: airport pickups usually come at least three hours before your flight. See leaving San Pedro for the airport.

Quick recommendations

  • If you are traveling solo → book a shared seat with Ruta Chile.
  • If you are a couple landing late → book the private transfer.
  • If you are four friends with backpacks → take the CLP 75,000 taxi.
  • If you want every option on one page → read the full transport guide or our transfer cost guide.

"The company was flexible. The car was modern and we got there in time for our flight."

"Everything was perfect."

GetYourGuide traveler Germany

"Easy transfer. Driver was a little helpful with our baggage. We did shared tranfer on way back and saved $140+."

GetYourGuide traveler United States

"Our driver was excellent, friendly and drove safely. HOWEVER, there were only 2 of us and a 14 seater min-bus was sent, which was disproportionate and unnecessarily expensive, when a car could have been sent at a fraction of the cost, which would also have been better for the environment as well."
