Transfer vs Bus

Transfer or Bus From Calama Airport?

What the bus really costs once you add the ride into Calama town, and when it is worth it.

The bus from Calama to San Pedro de Atacama costs CLP 7,000 and takes about 1 hour 30 minutes, but it leaves from terminals in Calama town, about 7 km from the airport. Add a taxi into town and a solo traveler pays about CLP 15,000 to 17,000 in total, close to the CLP 17,900 shared transfer. The bus only clearly saves money for two or more people sharing that taxi.

Counter, taxi and shared fares are the airport’s published tariffs from 1 April 2026. The bus fare and timetable are for Frontera del Norte and Atacama 2000, the two companies selling the route online.

What the bus really costs

On its own, CLP 7,000 is the cheapest ticket to San Pedro. The catch is the first leg. No bus runs from El Loa Airport, so you need an authorized taxi to central Calama (CLP 8,000 to 10,000 per car under the airport tariff) or a shared ride into town (CLP 7,000 to 8,000 per person).

TravelersBus route per person (taxi into town + bus)Counter shared transfer
1CLP 15,000 to 17,000CLP 17,900
2CLP 11,000 to 12,000CLP 17,900
3About CLP 9,700 to 10,300CLP 17,900

Then add the far end. The San Pedro bus terminal sits about 1 km southeast of the center, which is a short walk with a backpack but a long one with a suitcase, and many hotels lie outside the center. A solo traveler saves at most a few thousand pesos and loses an hour or more; a couple saves around CLP 6,000 each.

What the transfer gets you

A shared transfer starts where you are standing. The DMC Latam shared transfer cost $29.99 per person one way and $59.99 round trip when we checked on 3 October 2026, rated 4.6 from 315 reviews. You send your flight number, arrival time and hotel by email or WhatsApp, and the van runs to San Pedro. Read our DMC Latam breakdown for the full details.

The Ruta Chile Calama Airport transfer is the other strong shared option at $29.90 one way, rated 4.6 from 814 reviews, with one suitcase and one carry-on per person included and the driver waiting at the exit door with your name. See our Ruta Chile breakdown.

Shared vans do wait to fill, often 30 to 50 minutes after landing, and stop at several hotels. That still usually beats a taxi ride into Calama, a wait for the next bus and a walk or taxi at the San Pedro end.

Timing: when the bus does not work

The listed bus timetable runs from 07:10 to 20:00. Once you add bag collection and the 7 km into town, a flight landing after about 7 pm leaves you racing for the last departure, and a later one rules the bus out. Late arrivals are better served by a pre-booked transfer: in high season some counter operators run only a single shared departure for flights landing between about 9 and 11 pm. Our arrivals guide walks through what happens after you land.

Round trips change the sums

If you book the transfer both ways, the gap narrows further. DMC Latam’s round trip cost $59.99 per person when we checked, and the Ruta Chile round trip $56. The bus on the way back has the same problem in reverse: it ends in Calama town, a taxi ride short of the airport.

Who should take the bus

The bus suits backpackers traveling in pairs or small groups, landing in the morning or early afternoon, with light bags and a hostel near the San Pedro terminal. It also suits anyone already staying a night in Calama, since the town terminals are then the natural starting point. Everyone else, especially solo travelers, families and anyone with a suitcase, is better served by a transfer.

Practical tips

  • Withdraw pesos at the airport ATMs. The taxi into town and the bus ticket are paid in Chilean pesos.
  • Buy the bus ticket online if you can, so you know your departure before you leave the airport.
  • Ask the taxi for the right terminal: departure points in Calama vary by company.
  • Keep water handy. San Pedro sits at about 2,400 m and the first day at altitude can tire you.
  • For the trip back, see our departure guide; a bus to Calama town still leaves you a taxi short of the airport.

Quick recommendations

  • If you are solo with a suitcase → book the DMC Latam shared transfer.
  • If you are two backpackers landing in the morning → the taxi plus bus saves around CLP 6,000 each.
  • If you land in the evening → book a transfer before you fly.
  • If you are three or four → also compare the taxi on our transfer vs taxi page.
  • If you want every option side by side → read the full transport guide.
