How a Shared Transfer Works

One van, several passengers, a few stops in San Pedro.

  1. Book your seat

Book one way or both, then email or WhatsApp DMC Latam your flight number, arrival or departure time and your address in San Pedro.

  2. Wait for the van to fill

Shared vans group passengers from your flight and others landing close to it, so expect some waiting at the airport.

  3. Ride Route 23

The van covers about 100 km to San Pedro in about 1 hour 30 minutes of driving.

  4. Stops around town

Passengers are dropped one by one around San Pedro. Yours may be the first stop or the last.

What a Shared Transfer Is Really Like

A shared transfer between Calama Airport and San Pedro de Atacama costs about $30 per person on GetYourGuide ($29.99 with DMC Latam, $29.90 with Ruta Chile, when we checked on 3 October 2026) or CLP 17,900 at the airport counters. You share a van with other passengers, wait while it fills, and get dropped at your accommodation after a few stops around town.

What actually happens on a shared transfer

You walk out of arrivals, find your driver, and then usually wait. Shared vans collect passengers from your flight and from flights landing close to it, and reports put departure at about 30 to 50 minutes after landing. Some local operators also need a minimum number of passengers, often four, before a run is confirmed. Use the time to withdraw pesos at the terminal ATMs and use the bathroom, since there is nothing on the road.

Once moving, the drive is about 100 km on Route 23 and takes about 1 hour 30 minutes. Then the van works its way around San Pedro. Drop-offs go one by one, so with a full van your stop may come well after the first. Door to door, a shared transfer usually takes two to three hours from landing to your hotel, against about an hour and a half of pure driving.

The DMC Latam shared transfer runs this service in vans with drivers authorized by Chile’s Ministry of Transportation, and confirms the logistics with you before the day. Our DMC Latam breakdown covers the listing in full.

Luggage on a shared van

Space is shared, so luggage rules are tighter than in a private vehicle. Ruta Chile includes one suitcase and one carry-on per person and does not allow oversize luggage. Local operators quote a similar rule, one bag of up to 23 kg plus a small personal item, and bikes or sports equipment are generally not carried on shared runs. If you travel with skis, a bike box or a large camera case, ask before you book or take a private transfer.

Drop-off in San Pedro

Shared transfers drop you at your accommodation within the operator’s service area, which covers the town of San Pedro. Lodges and cabins out in the ayllus, on dirt roads beyond town, are the exception: some operators offer an alternative meeting point instead of the door. Send the full address when you book and ask the operator to confirm. If you are still choosing where to stay, our where to stay in San Pedro guide shows which areas sit close to town.

Arrival times and the late-evening gap

Shared services are built around the daytime flights. Local operators run shared vans for flights landing roughly between 6:40 am and 9:00 pm. In the high season, which runs roughly from September or October to March or April, some add a single late shared run for flights landing between 9:00 and 11:00 pm, and that van may wait a long time to fill.

If your flight lands near or after the end of that window, book your seat in advance with your flight number so the operator knows you are coming, or switch to a private transfer. Our page on Calama Airport arrivals covers the terminal step by step.

Who a shared transfer suits

A shared seat suits solo travelers and couples on a daytime flight, who travel light and do not mind half an hour of waiting. It is the lowest-cost door-to-door option for one or two people.

It suits groups less well. At the counter fare, four people pay CLP 71,600 in total, close to the CLP 75,000 an authorized airport taxi charges for the whole car. Families with young children, anyone landing late and anyone carrying bulky gear usually do better with a private vehicle. Compare the two on our Calama Airport taxi page.

Practical tips

  • Send your flight number with the booking, so a delay does not leave you without a seat.
  • Withdraw Chilean pesos at the El Loa ATMs while the van fills up.
  • Keep a jacket and water in your carry-on; your suitcase may be stacked out of reach.
  • If you book the return leg, expect a pickup about three hours before your flight, since the van has other stops.
  • Take it easy on the first day. San Pedro sits at about 2,400 m.

Quick recommendations

  • If you are one or two people on a daytime flight → book the DMC Latam shared transfer or the Ruta Chile one at $29.90.
  • If you want the cheapest shared round trip on GetYourGuide → Ruta Chile’s $56 round trip, explained on our round-trip transfers page.
  • If you are flexible and landing midday → the airport counters at CLP 17,900 work fine; see the shuttle page.
  • If you land after 9:00 pm or travel as four or more → look at a private transfer or a taxi.
