How the Return Transfer Works

From your hotel in San Pedro to the El Loa terminal on the DMC Latam shared service.

  1. Book the San Pedro to airport leg

Book one way at $29.99 per person, or the round trip at $59.99 when you book your arrival (prices checked 3 October 2026).

  2. Send your departure details

Email or WhatsApp the operator your flight number, departure time and the hotel or address where you are staying.

  3. Be ready at pickup time

Shared vans collect several hotels on the way out of town, so be outside with your bags at the time you are given.

  4. Check in at El Loa

About 1 hour 30 minutes of driving later you reach the airport, with time to check in before your domestic flight.

Departure Guide

Getting From San Pedro to Your Flight

When to leave, how pickup times work and which transfer to book for the trip back.

Plan to leave San Pedro de Atacama about 3 hours before your flight from Calama’s El Loa Airport. The drive is about 100 km and roughly 1 hour 30 minutes, LATAM asks domestic passengers to be at the airport 2 hours before departure, and shared vans collect several hotels on the way out. That is why transfer operators usually pick you up at least three hours before take-off.

17:00About 14:00About 15:30 to 15:45
20:00About 17:00About 18:30 to 18:45

These assume a pickup three hours before departure. Some operators collect you up to 3 hours 30 minutes before and confirm the time the day before, so always go by the time your operator gives you.

Why three hours

The time adds up quickly. Shared vans pick up passengers at several hotels around San Pedro, which can take a while before the van is even on Route 23. The drive itself takes about 1 hour 30 minutes. LATAM asks passengers on domestic flights to be at the airport 2 hours before departure, and the other airlines at El Loa fly domestic routes too.

There is a fourth reason this year. Chile’s public works ministry is upgrading Route 23 between km 86.2 and 93.4, just west of San Pedro, with works running through 2026 and 2027. We found no reports of closures, but roadworks are the first thing to eat into a tight schedule. Do not shave the margin.

The transfers to book

The DMC Latam shared transfer runs in both directions and cost $29.99 per person one way when we checked on 3 October 2026, or $59.99 for a round trip booked with your arrival. It is rated 4.6 from 315 reviews. Send your flight number, departure time and hotel by email or WhatsApp. See our DMC Latam breakdown.

The Ruta Chile Calama Airport transfer cost $29.90 in either direction, with a $56 round trip, rated 4.6 from 814 reviews. Its listing says hotel-to-airport pickups are usually at least three hours before your flight, and asks you to confirm your departure time with your airline at least 24 hours before the service. See our Ruta Chile breakdown.

For an early flight or a family, the Ruta Chile private transfer cost $89 per person for two from San Pedro to the airport. With no other hotels to collect, you know exactly when you leave. Read our private transfer breakdown or the return-direction booking page, San Pedro de Atacama to Calama Airport.

Early flights

The first flights from El Loa mean a pickup in the dark, around 04:00 for a 07:00 departure. Pack the night before, ask your hotel about checkout and breakfast in advance, and put warm clothes on top: desert nights in San Pedro can drop below freezing in winter. A private transfer takes the stress out of the earliest flights because it does not wait for anyone else.

Planning your last day

Give your last day in San Pedro some slack. The El Tatio geyser tours leave around 04:00 to 05:00 and climb above 4,000 m, so schedule them earlier in your trip. A short half-day such as a Valle de la Luna tour fits a late-afternoon or evening flight if you are back with time to spare before pickup. Our things to do page has the full list.

Bus and taxi on the way back

The bus from San Pedro goes to Calama town, not to the airport, so you still need a taxi for the last 7 km. With bags and a flight to catch, that extra change rarely pays off; see transfer vs bus. The airport’s published CLP 75,000 taxi fare covers the airport-to-San Pedro direction, so agree a price in advance if you book a taxi from San Pedro.

At the airport

El Loa is a single terminal, so there is no question of which building to go to. The Sabores del Desierto restaurant is in the public hall on level 1, where you can still get a meal before security, and the OKRE restaurant and the Global Lounge (07:00 to 22:30) are upstairs on level 2. The terminal is open 24 hours, which helps on the earliest departures. Our Calama Airport guide covers the facilities in more detail.

Practical tips

  • Confirm your flight time with the airline 24 hours before your pickup.
  • Reconfirm your pickup time with the operator the day before.
  • Keep your ID or passport handy; you need it to fly, even domestically.
  • Spend your last pesos on the transfer tip or a snack; the airport has restaurants on both levels.
  • Allow extra time for the roadworks on Route 23 near San Pedro.

Quick recommendations

  • If your flight leaves mid-morning or later → book the DMC Latam shared transfer, or the round trip with your arrival.
  • If your flight leaves before about 08:00 → book the private transfer.
  • If you have not booked the arrival yet → book both legs together on our round-trip transfers page.
  • If you want to compare every fare first → read the transfer cost guide.
