Book the San Pedro to El Loa option, then email or WhatsApp DMC Latam your flight number, departure time and the address where you are staying.

The operator schedules the van and confirms the logistics with you. Expect a pickup about three hours before your flight.

Which return transfer to book

The two shared transfers cost almost exactly the same, so choose on how you like to deal with the operator. The DMC Latam shared transfer is rated 4.6 from 315 reviews and runs vans driven by professional drivers authorized by Chile’s Ministry of Transportation. After booking, you email or WhatsApp your flight number, departure time and address, and the operator contacts you to confirm the pickup. Our DMC Latam breakdown has the details.

The Ruta Chile shared transfer has far more reviews, 814 rated 4.6, and runs in both directions for $29.90 per person. Ruta Chile states that hotel-to-airport pickups are usually at least three hours before departure.

The private transfer is the cheaper direction of Ruta Chile’s private service: $89 per person for two travelers from San Pedro, against $95 from the airport. It suits families and groups who want one stop only, and anyone on an early flight who would rather not wait while a shared van works its way around town. Our private transfers page covers it in full.

When you will be picked up

Shared operators in San Pedro collect passengers about three to three and a half hours before the flight. The arithmetic behind that: about 1 hour 30 minutes on the road, time for the van to make its other pickups, and the airline’s check-in window. LATAM asks domestic passengers to be at the airport two hours before departure.

For a 2:00 pm flight, that means a pickup somewhere between about 10:30 and 11:00 am. For an early morning flight it means leaving before dawn, when San Pedro is cold, so keep a warm layer out of your suitcase. The operator gives you the exact time; if you have not heard by the day before, message them. Our guide to leaving San Pedro for Calama Airport goes deeper on flight timing and pickup windows.

One thing to factor in through 2026 and 2027: Route 23 is being rebuilt on a 7 km stretch just west of San Pedro, between km 86.2 and 93.4. No closures have been announced, but the works sit at the start of your trip, so a pickup on the early side of the window costs you little.

Booking the return leg

Book the return when you book your arrival, or as soon as you know your flight. The airport’s published counter and taxi fares cover rides leaving the terminal, so there is no fixed fare in this direction. A pre-booked transfer is the simple way back.

Both shared listings sell the return as its own option, so you can book San Pedro to El Loa on its own. If you have not booked your arrival yet, a round trip can work out cheaper: Ruta Chile’s shared round trip was $56 per person when we checked. Our round-trip transfers page compares the round-trip prices with two single fares.

Give the operator the full address of your accommodation. Pickups inside San Pedro are routine; for a lodge out in the ayllus on a dirt road, ask them to confirm they can reach it.

At El Loa Airport

The terminal is small and open 24 hours, with a single building for all departures. Flights from Calama are domestic only, on LATAM, SKY and JetSMART, and most go to Santiago, about two hours away. There are ATMs, Wi-Fi and a couple of places to eat, so arriving early is no hardship. For more on the terminal, see our Calama Airport guide.

Practical tips

  • Reconfirm your flight time with the airline at least 24 hours before, as Ruta Chile asks, and send any change to your operator.
  • Be in the lobby with your bags a few minutes before the pickup time. Shared vans have other passengers to collect.
  • Keep within one suitcase and one carry-on per person on Ruta Chile; oversize luggage is not allowed.
  • Spend your last pesos or keep some for a tip. Gratuities are not included on either Ruta Chile listing.
  • Carry water and a layer. The desert is dry, and early departures are cold.

Quick recommendations

  • If you are one or two people with a daytime flight → book the DMC Latam shared transfer or Ruta Chile at $29.90.
  • If your flight leaves early in the morning → consider the private transfer so nobody else’s pickup delays you.
  • If you are three or more → compare the private transfer’s per-person price with shared seats for everyone.
  • If you have not booked your arrival yet → book a round trip and both legs are done.
