How the Private Transfer Works

Book, send your details, and walk straight from the baggage belt to your own vehicle.

  1. Book and send your details

Book the direction you need, then give the operator a mobile number, your flight number, arrival or departure time and your hotel.

  2. Find your name sign

At the airport exit, your driver waits with a sign showing your name. Nobody else is joining you.

  3. Leave straight away

There is no van to fill. You load your bags and set off on Route 23, about 100 km to San Pedro.

  4. Door to door

About 1 hour 30 minutes later you are at your accommodation, with no other stops on the way.

When a Private Transfer Is Worth Paying For

The price for couples and groups, late arrivals and what you get for the extra money.

A private transfer from Calama Airport to San Pedro de Atacama cost $95 per person for two travelers ($190 for the pair) on GetYourGuide when we checked on 3 October 2026, and $89 per person in the other direction. The vehicle is only for your party, your driver waits at the exit with a name sign, and you leave straight away with no other stops.

What you get for the extra money

The Ruta Chile private transfer is the private option we recommend. It is rated 4.8 from 8 reviews, run by Ruta Chile, the operator behind the most-reviewed of the four Calama Airport transfers we found on GetYourGuide, and the listing says the company has more than 20 years of experience. Your driver meets you at the airport exit with a sign showing your name, and the vehicle carries only you and your companions. Our private transfer breakdown covers the listing in full.

The real gain is time and control. A shared van waits to fill and then drops passengers one by one around San Pedro, so landing to hotel usually takes two to three hours. Private, you leave as soon as your bags are in, and the drive itself is about 1 hour 30 minutes for the 100 km on Route 23. Your stop is the only stop, which matters if you are staying at a lodge outside town.

The price for couples and groups

GetYourGuide prices this transfer per person. When we checked for two adults, it was $95 each from the airport to San Pedro and $89 each from San Pedro to the airport. We did not price other group sizes, so enter your own number of travelers on the booking calendar to see the real figure for your party.

For a couple, private costs roughly three times a pair of shared seats ($190 against about $60). Whether that is worth it comes down to your arrival time and how much the waiting bothers you. For larger groups, compare three numbers before you book: the private transfer for your group size, shared seats for everyone, and an authorized airport taxi, which charges a flat CLP 75,000 per car from 1 April 2026 if your group and its luggage fit in one vehicle. Local operators also quote private vans in pesos, with the per-person cost falling as the group grows. Our Calama Airport taxi page and the transfer vs taxi comparison work through the break-even.

Late arrivals and early flights

Private transfers earn their price at the edges of the day. Shared vans are built around flights landing roughly between 6:40 am and 9:00 pm, and in the high season some operators add one late shared run that can wait a long time to fill. Local operators run private transfers much later, up to midnight. The airport itself is open 24 hours.

If your flight from Santiago lands after dark, a private transfer means you walk out to a waiting driver and are in San Pedro about an hour and a half later. The road is long and largely unlit, with heavy truck traffic serving the mines, so it is not one to drive yourself after a long day of flying.

For the return, the same logic applies to early morning departures. A private pickup collects only you, so nobody else’s pickup eats into the time before your flight. Our San Pedro to Calama Airport page covers return pickup times.

Booking it

After booking, the operator needs a mobile number, your flight number, the arrival or departure time, and the hotel where you start or finish. Pets are not allowed. Free cancellation is available up to 24 hours before.

If you prefer to keep costs down and are arriving in daylight, the Ruta Chile shared transfer at $29.90 per person is the alternative; our shared transfers page explains how the waiting and stops work.

Practical tips

  • Enter your real group size on the booking calendar. The per-person price depends on how many of you there are.
  • Send the full address of your accommodation, especially if it is outside the town center.
  • Withdraw Chilean pesos at the El Loa ATMs for tips, which are not included.
  • Keep your phone charged and the operator’s number saved, in case your flight is delayed.
  • Take the first evening easy. San Pedro sits at about 2,400 m.

Quick recommendations

  • If you land after about 9:00 pm → book the Ruta Chile private transfer.
  • If you are a family with children or bulky gear → private, so the bags and the kids go straight in.
  • If you are three or four people arriving in daylight → compare the private price for your group with a CLP 75,000 airport taxi.
  • If you are a couple on a midday flight → a shared seat at about $30 each is the value choice.
  • If you want both legs private → see our round-trip transfers page.

What Private Transfer Guests Say

Ratings and review counts are the operators' live figures on GetYourGuide and may shift slightly day to day.

"The company was flexible. The car was modern and we got there in time for our flight."

Jim United Kingdom

"Everything was perfect."

GetYourGuide traveler Germany

"Easy transfer. Driver was a little helpful with our baggage. We did shared tranfer on way back and saved $140+."

GetYourGuide traveler United States

"Our driver was excellent, friendly and drove safely. HOWEVER, there were only 2 of us and a 14 seater min-bus was sent, which was disproportionate and unnecessarily expensive, when a car could have been sent at a fraction of the cost, which would also have been better for the environment as well."
