Planning Your Piedras Rojas and Lagoons Tour

The route, the park tickets, the altitude and the two tours most visitors choose between.

A Piedras Rojas and altiplanic lagoons tour is a full day from San Pedro de Atacama, about 6 am to 4 pm, taking in the Miscanti and Miñiques lagoons, the red rocks of Piedras Rojas at about 4,000 m, the village of Socaire and the flamingos at Laguna Chaxa. When we checked on 3 October 2026, the two main tours cost $84.55 and $86 per person, with park fees extra.

Both tours also have free cancellation up to 24 hours before. Of the tours to this area we found on GetYourGuide, the Ruta Chile tour has the most reviews.

What you see on the day

The route runs south from San Pedro along Route 23, past the Salar de Atacama, to Piedras Rojas about 150 km away, roughly two and a half hours by road. On the Ruta Chile tour you are collected around 6:00 to 6:30 am and have breakfast at the Miscanti and Miñiques lagoons, two deep blue lakes ringed by volcanoes at around 4,100 m.

Next comes the Salar de Talar, better known as Piedras Rojas, where red volcanic rock meets a turquoise salt lagoon. You walk set paths at the viewpoints; access to the salt flat itself is often restricted. On the way back you stop in Socaire, an Atacameño village with cultivation terraces and a village church, and then at Laguna Chaxa in the Salar de Atacama, part of the Los Flamencos National Reserve, home to three species of flamingo, before returning to San Pedro around 4 pm.

The Layana tour covers the same four places and adds snacks to breakfast and lunch. It asks for bookings at least 10 hours before departure.

Park fees and tickets

You pay two separate entry fees on this route, and neither tour price includes them.

  • Miscanti, Miñiques and Piedras Rojas are run by the Socaire community. Tickets are sold online only at socairechile.cl, never at the parks, and you check in at the control office in Socaire with a QR code. On a tour, ask your operator how it arranges this; Layana collects the fees at its office before the day.
  • Laguna Chaxa is run by the Toconao community. Its official ticket site lists CLP 13,714 for a foreign adult and CLP 10,285 for a Chilean adult.

Both operators put the combined total at about CLP 29,000 per foreign adult. Layana lists CLP 20,500 for Chilean adults and adds a 4% surcharge if you pay the fees by link. Discounts apply for children, seniors and holders of an Indigenous certificate.

If you want the fees folded in, Pukarumi’s Best of Atacama: 4 Tours in 3 Days lists Chaxa, the altiplanic lagoons and Piedras Rojas entry (CLP 28,800) as included, alongside El Tatio, Moon Valley and Baltinache. It was $371.40 per person when we checked and does not include an airport transfer.

Altitude and weather

The lagoons and Piedras Rojas sit at around 4,000 m, well above San Pedro’s 2,407 m, and you climb there within about an hour and a half of breakfast. Plan this tour after two or three nights in San Pedro, once you have done lower trips such as Valle de la Luna or the salt flat lagoons, and before the dawn trip to the El Tatio geysers, which goes higher still.

Snow closes this area. Piedras Rojas, Miscanti and Miñiques were all shut on 13 August 2026, and the Socaire community enables entry day by day according to the weather. When the lagoons are closed, tours often swap in Laguna Tuyajto. If you travel in the austral winter (June to September) or the altiplanic summer rains (January to March), keep a spare day.

Which tour to choose

Pick the Ruta Chile full-day tour if you want the most-reviewed Piedras Rojas tour we cover, with hotel pickup, breakfast and lunch. Our breakdown of the Ruta Chile tour has the full timings.

Pick the Layana triple tour if you like a clear fee breakdown upfront and bilingual guides in English and Spanish. See our Layana tour breakdown.

If you are still planning your arrival, the Ruta Chile 4-Day Magic Desert Tour ($310 per person when we checked) starts with a transfer from Calama Airport and includes this route on day two, plus Moon Valley, El Tatio and Laguna Cejar. Entry fees and accommodation are extra, and it asks for a flight landing before 10:00. Compare it on our tours with airport transfer page.

Practical tips

  • Carry cash and your passport or ID; the Ruta Chile listing asks for both.
  • Bring sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat and water. The sun is strong at 4,000 m even when the air is cold.
  • Wear layers. Breakfast by the lagoons is chilly, while Chaxa in the afternoon can be warm.
  • Walk slowly at the viewpoints and tell your guide if you feel dizzy or get a headache.
  • Check the weather and your operator’s messages the evening before in winter.

"Brilliant trip! Watching the sunrise in the desert with breakfast was really nice. The places we visited were beautiful. Our guides were really good at making sure we got the photos we wanted, and explaining about the history of the places. Our driver was so lovely and stopped multiple times on the journey so we could look at various animals we saw along the way. The flamingo lagoon was amazing! And the lunch at the end was also really good."

"This tour was absolutely fantastic and easily the highlight of my trip to Chile. Every stop was breathtaking, especially Piedras Rojas and the Altiplanic Lagoons. The landscapes are unlike anything I've ever seen. Everything was very well organized from start to finish. The transportation was comfortable, punctual, and made the long journey enjoyable. The guide was excellent—very friendly, knowledgeable, and passionate about the region. Throughout the day, they shared fascinating information about the history, geology, wildlife, and local culture, which made the experience much more meaningful. I learned so much. I also loved the atmosphere during the trip. The music played in the vehicle was great and perfectly matched the incredible scenery, making the journey between destinations even more enjoyable. If you're visiting the Atacama Desert, this tour is an absolute must. It exceeded all my expectations, and I would recommend it to anyone looking for an unforgettable experience."
