El Tatio Guide

Planning Your El Tatio Geysers Tour

When to go in your stay, what it costs, what to wear and which tour to pick.

An El Tatio geysers tour from San Pedro de Atacama leaves at about 4 to 5 am, reaches the geyser field at 4,320 m around sunrise and has you back in town by late morning or around midday. When we checked on 3 October 2026, half-day tours on GetYourGuide started from $50 per person, and every tour on this page leaves out the CLP 15,000 entry fee, which you pay in cash.

Why the tours leave in the dark

The steam is the reason you go, and it is tallest when freezing air meets the hot vents, roughly between 5:00 and 7:30 am. Chile’s official tourism site puts the jets at up to about 10 m at sunrise. Tours therefore leave San Pedro between about 4:00 and 5:00 am for a drive of around an hour and a half.

The Ruta Chile half-day tour picks up at 5 am and reaches the field at about 6:45. You walk a marked circuit among fumaroles and hundreds of boiling pools, then stop for breakfast before heading down past the Putana River and the village of Machuca, where the houses are still built in the traditional style. By the time the sun warms the air, the steam thins out and the field looks quite different, so a late start defeats the point.

What it costs

The tour price covers transport, a guide and breakfast. The entry fee is separate.

  • Geyser field entry: CLP 15,000 for general admission, the same for Chileans and foreigners, according to the community administration that runs the site. Bring it in cash.
  • Children under 8 are listed as free on the official fee table, though age rules differ between sources (see below).
  • Tips are excluded on the Ruta Chile listing and are optional.

San Pedro’s ATMs can run out of cash at busy weekends and in high season, so withdraw pesos in Calama before you head out. Our guide to the Calama Airport transfer covers the airport ATMs and the drive in.

Altitude, cold and who should skip it

El Tatio sits at about 4,320 m, almost 2,000 m above San Pedro. That climb happens in under two hours, before breakfast, so this is the excursion to save for later in your stay. CDC advice is to spend at least two to three nights at around San Pedro’s altitude before going higher, and the usual order is the lower sites first, such as Valle de la Luna and the salt flat lagoons, then Piedras Rojas and the altiplanic lagoons, with El Tatio last.

The cold is real. Chile’s tourism board puts dawn temperatures at around 0 °C, and travel sources report winter minimums far below freezing. Dress in layers you can peel off as the sun comes up: a warm jacket, hat, gloves and closed shoes, plus a swimsuit only if your tour stops at a hot pool.

Age and health restrictions apply, and the sources disagree on the details. Chile’s official tourism blog says pregnant women and people over 70 are not allowed, while a local agency says over-70s need a medical certificate. The Ruta Chile listing says its tour is not suitable for children under 11 or pregnant women. Check with your operator before you book if any of this applies to your group.

Closures and the weather

El Tatio closes when snow or storms make the access roads unsafe. It was closed on 13 August 2026 after snow, along with Piedras Rojas and the altiplanic lagoons, and storms in the altiplanic summer (January to February) can shut it too. The site’s operator posts closures on eltatio.net and updates them through the day. If the field is shut on your date, the tour company will normally move you to another morning, which is one more reason to book El Tatio for the middle of your stay and not your last day.

Which tour to choose

The Ruta Chile half-day tour is the simplest choice: hotel pickup and drop-off, breakfast, the Putana River and Machuca, from $50. Our breakdown of the half-day tour covers the timings.

The Inspires Viagens geyser field and wetlands tour, from $68, starts a little earlier at 4:30 am from a meeting point and spends more time on the Putana and Machuca wetlands, with Andean wildlife along the way. It suits you if wildlife matters as much as the steam. See our wetlands tour breakdown.

If you have not booked your stay yet, two packages put El Tatio inside a short itinerary. 3 Perfect Days in Atacama ($280 per person when we checked) includes shared transfers to and from Calama Airport, stargazing, Baltinache and Moon Valley, with El Tatio on the morning of your last day. Pukarumi’s Best of Atacama: 4 Tours in 3 Days ($371.40 per person when we checked) bundles El Tatio with Piedras Rojas, Moon Valley and Baltinache but does not include the airport transfer. Our page on Atacama tours with airport transfer compares the packages.

Practical tips

  • Bring CLP 15,000 per person in cash for the entry fee, plus a little extra for snacks in Machuca.
  • Sleep early. A 4:30 or 5 am pickup means your alarm goes off before 4 am.
  • Layer up for well below freezing at the start and sunshine by mid-morning, with sunglasses and sunscreen.
  • Drink water, skip alcohol the night before, and tell your guide if you get a headache, dizziness or nausea.
  • Leave at least one spare morning in case the field closes for weather.

"excellent excursion, very well organized with an excellent French-speaking guide. The guide was remarkable, very friendly, always concerned about our state of health at this altitude. He prepared a top-of-the-range breakfast and found a magical place to spend a great time together. We highly recommend."

Laurent France

"All the stars were because of the guide Lorena: super lively, creative, intelligent, well-informed and cultured. The place is magnificent and unique! It was worth every penny."

Everton Brazil

"The organisation was horrible. I was waiting for more than 45 mins for the pick up."

GetYourGuide traveler Germany

"The geysers are very special. The live guide provided good information and showed us a lot. He also served a great breakfast after the visit to the geysers. Finally, he showed us some other interesting things, such as a wetland with waterfowl."
