How Long From Calama Airport to San Pedro
The drive, the waiting and the stops, for each way of making the trip.
The drive from Calama’s El Loa Airport to San Pedro de Atacama is about 100 km on Route 23 and takes about 1 hour 30 minutes, the figure Chile’s tourism board gives. Door to door, a private transfer or taxi gets you there in about 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours after landing, a shared van in 2 to 3 hours with waiting and stops, and the bus route usually takes longer.
Door-to-door time by mode
| Mode | Waiting at the airport | On the road | Total from landing (approx.) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Private transfer | None once you have your bags | About 1 h 30 | 1 h 30 to 2 h |
| Authorized taxi | None once you are in the car | About 1 h 30 | 1 h 30 to 2 h |
| Shared transfer | Often 30 to 50 min while the van fills | About 1 h 30, plus hotel stops | 2 to 3 h |
| Bus from Calama town | Taxi into town, then the next departure | About 1 h 30 on the bus | Allow 3 h or more |
| Rental car | Paperwork at the desk | 1 h 15 to 1 h 30 | About 2 h |
Totals add time for collecting bags, which is quick at a single small terminal on most days but varies with the flight.
The drive itself
Route 23 is a paved two-lane road. From the airport it runs straight and almost empty across the desert, then climbs into the Cordillera de Domeyko to a high point of about 3,400 m around km 55 before descending with several curves toward the San Pedro basin, which sits at about 2,400 m. Driving times quoted for the road run from 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes; we plan on the longer figure.
Two things can stretch it. The road carries heavy mining and freight traffic, which slows the climbs. And Chile’s public works ministry is upgrading the stretch between km 86.2 and 93.4, just west of San Pedro, with works under way through 2026 and 2027. No source we found describes closures or convoys, but leave a margin, especially on the way back to a flight.
Shared transfer: where the extra hour goes
A shared van is cheap because it carries passengers from more than one flight, so it often leaves 30 to 50 minutes after a plane lands. In San Pedro it drops each party at their accommodation, and the last drop-off can come a while after the first. Allow 2 to 3 hours from landing to your door.
The Ruta Chile Calama Airport transfer, rated 4.6 from 814 reviews, cost $29.90 per person one way when we checked on 3 October 2026. Send your flight number and the operator tracks your arrival; the driver waits by the exit door with your name. See our Ruta Chile breakdown and the shared transfer guide.
Private transfer and taxi: the fast options
If time matters most, take a vehicle for your party alone. The Ruta Chile private transfer cost $95 per person from the airport for two travelers when we checked, rated 4.8 from 8 reviews, and leaves as soon as you are out of the terminal. Read our private transfer breakdown. An authorized taxi at the airport’s CLP 75,000 fare per car is just as quick. Our transfer vs taxi page compares them.
Rental car: your own clock
A rental car from one of the eight desks in the terminal starts as soon as the paperwork is done, and the drive takes 1 hour 15 to 1 hour 30 minutes. Fill the tank in Calama first, as there is no fuel station on the way, and allow for slow trucks on the climb.
Bus: the slowest route
The bus is about 1 hour 30 minutes on the road too, but it starts in Calama town, about 7 km from the airport and roughly 15 to 20 minutes away by taxi in light traffic. Frontera del Norte and Atacama 2000 list 16 departures a day between 07:10 and 20:00, so you may wait at the terminal for the next one. At the far end, the San Pedro bus terminal is about 1 km from the center. See transfer vs bus.
Your arrival flight and the clock
Most visitors connect through Santiago, about 2 hours of flying from Calama. Land in the morning and you can be in San Pedro for lunch and an easy afternoon. Land in the evening and you arrive in the dark: in high season some counter operators run only a single shared departure for flights landing between about 9 and 11 pm, so pre-book. Avoid driving yourself on your first night if you can, as the road is largely unlit.
Practical tips
- Plan your first day around the 2,400 m altitude: nothing more demanding than a short walk or a Valle de la Luna tour.
- Fill up with fuel in Calama if you drive; there is no station along the route.
- Send your flight number with your booking, so a delay does not cost you your ride.
- On the way back, operators usually collect you at least three hours before your flight. See the departure guide.
Quick recommendations
- If you want to arrive fastest → book the private transfer or take a taxi.
- If you want the simplest value trip → book the Ruta Chile shared transfer and allow 2 to 3 hours.
- If you land late → pre-book any transfer before you fly.
- If you have a tour booked the same evening → leave a wide margin and read our arrivals guide.

What Transfer Passengers Say
Ratings and review counts are the operators' live figures on GetYourGuide and may shift slightly day to day.
"Collected from the arrivals hall with my name on a board, waited a few minutes for the other passenger and off we went! Seamless journey after a lot of travel"
"Booked a transfer from San Pedro to Calama airport. Communication was great and I was given a clear pickup window - they were punctual and got me to the airport in good time. Smooth journey and efficient service. Having done this by public bus a week before and had a not-so-great experience, this was much better for my stress levels when I had a flight to get!"
"Booked the round trip service. Communicated very far in advance for the pick up at Calama airport and was standing at the exit with a sign listing the names of all passengers that had booked with the transfer, then sorted us into groups and had us on the vans. Very efficient. Return transfer communication was not until 12 hours before our pickup time (early the next morning), but had all our information. Pick up was very early (get you to airport with 2 hours prior to boarding, which is not really necessary at such a small airport). However, met us at our hotel and even knocked on the door when ready to get us from the lobby. Drivers were fast and got us to our destination quickly. Buses are clean and modern, though limited leg room. An uber is probably cheaper if you are more than one person, but having this booked in advance gave good peace of mind."
"The trip was professional, safe and comfortable. Door to door service."
"Efficient transfer to/from the airport, punctual, good communication, decent value, comfy vehicles. Good option for getting out to San Pedro"

"The whole process was very smooth, from being met at the airport to arriving at my lodging."
"Smooth pickup. All other passengers were from the same flight, so we didn't wait too much. Hotel drop-off. Good communication throughout. 5 stars."
