Which transfer to book

For most arrivals the Ruta Chile Calama Airport transfer is the one to book. Of the four Calama Airport transfers we found on GetYourGuide it has the most reviews by a wide margin, 814 with a 4.6 rating, and the price covers taxes plus one suitcase and one carry-on per person. The options on sale when we checked were all shared, at $29.90 per person in either direction. Our breakdown of the Ruta Chile transfer covers the listing in full.

The DMC Latam shared transfer is the natural second choice if Ruta Chile has no space on your date. It costs $29.99 per person, is rated 4.6 from 315 reviews and runs in vans with drivers authorized by Chile’s Ministry of Transportation.

Choose the private transfer when waiting is the thing you most want to avoid. The van is only for your party, the driver holds a sign with your name at the airport exit, and it costs $95 per person from the airport for two travelers. Our page on private transfers works through the price for groups and late flights, and the shared transfers page covers stops, luggage and waiting in detail.

What happens when you land at El Loa

El Loa Airport (CJC) has one terminal, about 6 km south-east of Calama, and it only handles domestic flights from LATAM, SKY and JetSMART. If you are flying in from abroad, you clear immigration at your first Chilean airport, normally Santiago, and the flight north takes about two hours.

The terminal is small. Collect your bags, walk toward the exit, and look for your driver standing by the door with a card that shows your name. The three transfer counters you pass on the way, Transfer Altiplánico, Transfer Pampa and Transvip, sell their own shared seats; if you have pre-booked, you can walk past them. Some Ruta Chile drivers speak little English, so keep the operator’s phone number handy in case you need help finding each other. Our Calama Airport arrivals guide walks through the terminal step by step.

On a shared transfer, expect some waiting before the van leaves. Shared vans fill up from your flight or one landing soon after, and reports put departure at about 30 to 50 minutes after landing.

The drive to San Pedro

The road is Route 23, paved and two lanes. It skirts Calama, runs straight across open desert, climbs to a pass of about 3,400 m around the halfway mark and then drops toward San Pedro, which sits at about 2,400 m. There are no fuel stations or towns on the way, so use the bathroom in the terminal before you leave.

The government is rebuilding a 7 km stretch just west of San Pedro, between km 86.2 and 93.4, with works running through 2026 and into 2027. No closures have been announced, but a few extra minutes near the end of the trip would not be unusual.

Drop-off in San Pedro

The Ruta Chile listing drops you at your hotel or apartment in San Pedro. Most hotels sit within a short drive of the town center, but some lodges and cabins are out in the surrounding ayllus on dirt roads. If yours is one of them, put the full address in your booking message and ask the operator to confirm they can reach it. On a shared van your stop may come first or last, depending on the route around town.

Not sure where to stay yet? Our guide to where to stay in San Pedro de Atacama compares the town center with the quieter outskirts.

Booking it: what to send the operator

After booking, send your flight number, date and landing time, plus the name and address of your accommodation. Ruta Chile asks for this with the reservation; DMC Latam asks for it by email or WhatsApp. If your flight changes, tell the operator straight away. Both shared transfers have free cancellation up to 24 hours before.

You can also book both directions at once. Ruta Chile’s shared round trip was $56 per person when we checked, a little under two single fares, and our round-trip transfers page explains how to set up the return leg. For the full list of prices, including the airport counters, taxis and the bus from Calama town, see the Calama Airport transfer cost guide.

Practical tips

  • Withdraw Chilean pesos at the ATMs in the El Loa terminal. Tips and park entrance fees in San Pedro are paid in cash, and the town’s ATMs can run short.
  • Pack within one suitcase and one carry-on per person. Ruta Chile does not allow oversize luggage on this transfer.
  • Send your flight number with the booking, so the operator knows if you land late.
  • Take the first day slowly. You go from sea level in Santiago to about 2,400 m in San Pedro in a few hours.
  • Keep a jacket in your carry-on. Desert evenings turn cold fast, even when the afternoon is warm.

Quick recommendations

  • If you are one or two people landing in daylight → book the Ruta Chile shared transfer.
  • If Ruta Chile is full on your date → book the DMC Latam shared transfer at $29.99.
  • If you land late, travel as a family or carry a lot of gear → book the private transfer.
  • If you want the return leg sorted too → book the $56 shared round trip.
  • If you want the transfer bundled with your first tours → see our Atacama tours with airport transfer.

"excellent dependable and quality ride... (thats a bettet review than I gave miss world)"

Dean United Arab Emirates

"Collected from the arrivals hall with my name on a board, waited a few minutes for the other passenger and off we went! Seamless journey after a lot of travel"

Elena United Kingdom

"Booked a transfer from San Pedro to Calama airport. Communication was great and I was given a clear pickup window - they were punctual and got me to the airport in good time. Smooth journey and efficient service. Having done this by public bus a week before and had a not-so-great experience, this was much better for my stress levels when I had a flight to get!"

Sam United Kingdom

"Booked the round trip service. Communicated very far in advance for the pick up at Calama airport and was standing at the exit with a sign listing the names of all passengers that had booked with the transfer, then sorted us into groups and had us on the vans. Very efficient. Return transfer communication was not until 12 hours before our pickup time (early the next morning), but had all our information. Pick up was very early (get you to airport with 2 hours prior to boarding, which is not really necessary at such a small airport). However, met us at our hotel and even knocked on the door when ready to get us from the lobby. Drivers were fast and got us to our destination quickly. Buses are clean and modern, though limited leg room. An uber is probably cheaper if you are more than one person, but having this booked in advance gave good peace of mind."

Baily United States

"The trip was professional, safe and comfortable. Door to door service."

Hilary Jane Australia

"Efficient transfer to/from the airport, punctual, good communication, decent value, comfy vehicles. Good option for getting out to San Pedro"

"Smooth pickup. All other passengers were from the same flight, so we didn't wait too much. Hotel drop-off. Good communication throughout. 5 stars."
