Shared transfer: what most arrivals take
A shared transfer is a van that collects passengers from your flight and nearby flights and drops each of them at their accommodation in San Pedro. It is the lowest door-to-door price for one or two people and the option we recommend for most trips.
The Ruta Chile Calama Airport transfer cost $29.90 per person one way when we checked, rated 4.6 from 814 reviews, the most of the four Calama Airport transfers we found on GetYourGuide. The driver waits by the exit door with a card showing your name, and one suitcase plus one carry-on per person are included. Read our breakdown of the Ruta Chile transfer for the details. The DMC Latam shared transfer is the close alternative at $29.99, rated 4.6 from 315 reviews; see our DMC Latam breakdown.
The trade-off is waiting. Shared vans usually wait to fill and often leave around 30 to 50 minutes after a flight lands, then make several stops around town. Our shared transfer guide covers stops, luggage rules and who it suits.
Airport counters: booking on the spot
Three companies have counters in the terminal right after baggage claim: Transfer Altiplánico, Transfer Pampa and Transvip. From 1 April 2026 the airport’s published shared fare to San Pedro is CLP 17,900 per person. If you land in the middle of the day and do not mind queuing, the counter works.
Pre-booking makes the difference at the edges of the day. Counter shuttles are limited in the late evening, and in high season some run a single shared departure for flights landing between about 9 and 11 pm. A booking also gives the operator your flight number, so a delayed flight does not cost you your seat. Our Calama Airport shuttle page explains the counters in more detail.
Private transfer: no waiting
A private transfer is a vehicle for your party alone, leaving as soon as you have your bags. The Ruta Chile private transfer cost $95 per person from the airport for two travelers when we checked ($89 per person in the other direction), rated 4.8 from 8 reviews. The driver meets you at the airport exit with a name sign.
It earns its price when you land late, travel with children or carry more luggage than a shared van allows. See our private transfer breakdown and the private transfers page.
Taxi: fixed fare per car
The airport publishes an official fare for authorized taxis to San Pedro: CLP 75,000 per vehicle from 1 April 2026, and it lists 41 registered taxi operators. Split between three people that is CLP 25,000 each, and between four it is CLP 18,750 each, close to the counter shuttle’s per-person fare but with no waiting and no stops. For one or two people it costs far more per head than a shared seat. Ride-hailing apps are reported to be unreliable for this trip, so do not plan around them. The full break-even is on our transfer vs taxi page.
Bus: the budget route
No bus runs from the airport itself. Frontera del Norte and Atacama 2000 run buses from terminals in Calama town, about 7 km from the airport, with 16 departures a day between 07:10 and 20:00 listed on their booking platform. The fare is CLP 7,000 and the ride takes about 1 hour 30 minutes.
To reach the terminal you pay an official airport taxi (CLP 8,000 to 10,000 per car to central Calama) or a shared transfer into town (CLP 7,000 to 8,000 per person). The San Pedro bus terminal sits about 1 km southeast of the center, so many hotels still need a short walk or taxi at the far end. With waiting time, the bus route rarely saves money for two people sharing a taxi into Calama. See transfer vs bus.
Rental car: freedom with conditions
Eight rental companies have desks at the airport: West, Gama, Econorent, Salfa, MITTA, Chilean, Europcar and AVIS. Route 23 is paved, so any car manages the drive to San Pedro and the town itself. Fill the tank in Calama, as there is no fuel station along the way, and avoid your first drive after dark if you can: the road is largely unlit, carries heavy mining traffic and has curves on the descent. Roadworks between km 86.2 and 93.4, just west of San Pedro, run through 2026 and 2027.
A car is less useful than it looks once you arrive. Chile’s tourism board calls a 4x4 vital for Piedras Rojas at over 4,000 m, and most visitors leave the high-altitude excursions to tour operators.
Practical tips
- Send your flight number, arrival time and hotel address when you book any transfer; the operator plans the pickup around it.
- Withdraw Chilean pesos at the airport ATMs. Counters, taxis and buses want pesos, and the airport does not list an exchange office.
- Pack within one suitcase and one carry-on per person if you plan a shared van; extra luggage can cost extra.
- San Pedro sits at about 2,400 m. Drink water on the drive and keep the first day easy.
- Book the return leg now. Pickups for the airport are usually at least three hours before your flight; see our departure guide.
Quick recommendations
- If you are traveling solo or as a couple → book the Ruta Chile shared transfer.
- If you land after about 9 pm or have children with you → book the private transfer.
- If you are three or four with light bags → compare the CLP 75,000 taxi.
- If every peso counts and you land before mid-afternoon → taxi into Calama and take the bus.
- If you want tours and the transfer in one booking → see our Atacama tours with airport transfer.

What Transfer Passengers Say
Ratings and review counts are the operators' live figures on GetYourGuide and may shift slightly day to day.
"Collected from the arrivals hall with my name on a board, waited a few minutes for the other passenger and off we went! Seamless journey after a lot of travel"
"Booked a transfer from San Pedro to Calama airport. Communication was great and I was given a clear pickup window - they were punctual and got me to the airport in good time. Smooth journey and efficient service. Having done this by public bus a week before and had a not-so-great experience, this was much better for my stress levels when I had a flight to get!"
"Booked the round trip service. Communicated very far in advance for the pick up at Calama airport and was standing at the exit with a sign listing the names of all passengers that had booked with the transfer, then sorted us into groups and had us on the vans. Very efficient. Return transfer communication was not until 12 hours before our pickup time (early the next morning), but had all our information. Pick up was very early (get you to airport with 2 hours prior to boarding, which is not really necessary at such a small airport). However, met us at our hotel and even knocked on the door when ready to get us from the lobby. Drivers were fast and got us to our destination quickly. Buses are clean and modern, though limited leg room. An uber is probably cheaper if you are more than one person, but having this booked in advance gave good peace of mind."
"The trip was professional, safe and comfortable. Door to door service."
"Efficient transfer to/from the airport, punctual, good communication, decent value, comfy vehicles. Good option for getting out to San Pedro"

"The whole process was very smooth, from being met at the airport to arriving at my lodging."
"Smooth pickup. All other passengers were from the same flight, so we didn't wait too much. Hotel drop-off. Good communication throughout. 5 stars."
