How the Private Transfer Works

The taxi experience, arranged in advance: your own vehicle, no queue, no fare to agree.

  1. Book before you fly

Book the private transfer and send a mobile number, your flight number, landing time and your hotel in San Pedro.

  2. Find your name sign

At the airport exit, your driver waits with a sign showing your name. There is no fare to agree at the curb.

  3. Straight onto Route 23

The vehicle is only for your party, so you leave as soon as the bags are in, about 100 km to San Pedro.

  4. Door to door

About 1 hour 30 minutes later you are at your accommodation, with no other stops.

Airport Taxis

Taking a Taxi from Calama Airport

The official fares, how authorized taxis work and when a taxi beats a transfer.

An authorized taxi from Calama Airport to San Pedro de Atacama costs a fixed CLP 75,000 per car under the airport’s tariff from 1 April 2026, and a taxi into Calama costs CLP 8,000 to CLP 15,000 depending on the area. For one or two people a shared transfer is far cheaper; for three or four sharing one car, the taxi comes close.

Trip from El Loa AirportOfficial taxi fare (per car)
San Pedro de Atacama, about 100 kmCLP 75,000
Calama: Av. Jorge Alessandri (Sector Peuco)CLP 8,000
Calama: Av. Chorrillo, Av. Grecia, Calle SotomayorCLP 10,000
Calama: north entrance, Puerto SecoCLP 15,000

Fares are the airport’s published tariff from 1 April 2026 and are charged per vehicle.

How authorized taxis work at El Loa

The airport keeps a register of authorized taxis, 41 operators listed with their plates and phone numbers on its website, and publishes fixed fares for each destination. That means the price is set before you get in: CLP 75,000 to San Pedro. Take a taxi from the official airport service, check that the fare matches the tariff, and have pesos ready. Withdraw them at the ATMs in the terminal before you walk out.

Older guides quote lower prices, around CLP 60,000 for San Pedro. Those figures predate the current tariff, so plan on CLP 75,000. Ride-hailing apps are reported to be unreliable for this trip, so do not count on one being available when you land.

Taxi or transfer: the numbers by group size

The taxi fare is per car; transfer fares are per person. That makes group size the deciding number. Compared with a shared seat at the airport counter, CLP 17,900 per person:

GroupTaxi per personCounter shared seats in total
1 personCLP 75,000CLP 17,900
2 peopleCLP 37,500CLP 35,800 for two
3 peopleCLP 25,000CLP 53,700 for three
4 peopleCLP 18,750CLP 71,600 for four

For one or two travelers a shared van wins easily. At four, the taxi costs almost the same as four shared seats, and you leave straight away with no stops around San Pedro, provided your group and its luggage fit in one car. Pre-booked shared transfers on GetYourGuide cost about $30 per person when we checked on 3 October 2026; see the shared transfers page. Our transfer vs taxi comparison works through the break-even in more detail.

When a taxi beats a transfer

  • You are a group of three or four, travel light and want to leave immediately.
  • You land after the shared vans have stopped. Shared runs are built around flights landing roughly between 6:40 am and 9:00 pm, with a single late run in the high season at some operators.
  • You only need to get into Calama, for a hotel or the bus terminals in town. The taxi into town costs CLP 8,000 to CLP 15,000 per car.

The catch is that you cannot book the airport taxi before you fly, and the driver does not have your flight number if you land late. If you want the taxi experience with that settled in advance, the Ruta Chile private transfer is the alternative: a vehicle only for your party, a driver at the exit with your name on a sign, and $95 per person for two from the airport when we checked, with free cancellation up to 24 hours before. Our private transfer breakdown and the private transfers page cover it in full.

Taxi plus bus: the budget route

If you are on a tight budget, take a taxi into Calama and catch a bus from there. Frontera del Norte and Atacama 2000 run 16 departures a day between 7:10 am and 8:00 pm from terminals in town, at CLP 7,000 one way, taking about 1 hour 30 minutes. A taxi to the central areas plus one bus ticket comes to CLP 15,000 to CLP 17,000 for one person, about the same as a shared seat at the counter. It only saves money for two or more sharing the taxi, and it ends at the bus terminal in San Pedro, not at your hotel. See transfer vs bus for the full comparison.

Practical tips

  • Use the airport’s authorized taxi service and check the fare against the published tariff.
  • Carry pesos; the El Loa terminal has ATMs, and it is simplest to pay the fare in cash.
  • Confirm the car has room for your whole group and its luggage before you set off.
  • There are no towns or fuel stops on Route 23, so use the terminal facilities first.
  • The road is long and largely unlit, with heavy truck traffic, so after a late flight let someone else drive.

Quick recommendations

  • If you are one or two people → book a shared transfer, such as the Ruta Chile shared transfer at $29.90.
  • If you are three or four with light luggage, arriving in daylight → an authorized taxi at CLP 75,000 per car is fair value.
  • If you land late or want it booked before you fly → the Ruta Chile private transfer.
  • If you are only going into Calama → a taxi at CLP 8,000 to CLP 15,000 per car.

Ratings and review counts are the operators' live figures on GetYourGuide and may shift slightly day to day.

"The company was flexible. The car was modern and we got there in time for our flight."

Jim United Kingdom

"Everything was perfect."

GetYourGuide traveler Germany

"Easy transfer. Driver was a little helpful with our baggage. We did shared tranfer on way back and saved $140+."

GetYourGuide traveler United States

"Our driver was excellent, friendly and drove safely. HOWEVER, there were only 2 of us and a 14 seater min-bus was sent, which was disproportionate and unnecessarily expensive, when a car could have been sent at a fraction of the cost, which would also have been better for the environment as well."
