The Calama Airport Shuttle, Explained

What the shuttle is, the three counters in the terminal, and when to book ahead.

The Calama Airport shuttle to San Pedro de Atacama is a shared van. You can buy a seat at one of three counters in the terminal for the airport’s published fare of CLP 17,900 per person, or book ahead online for about $30 per person ($29.90 with Ruta Chile when we checked on 3 October 2026). Either way the van covers about 100 km in about 1 hour 30 minutes.

What “shuttle” means at Calama

Search for a Calama Airport shuttle and you will find the same product under several names: shuttle, shared transfer, transfer compartido. It is a van that carries several passengers from the airport to their accommodation in San Pedro, or the other way. The airport’s list of services shows no separate shuttle bus to San Pedro, and there is no public bus from the terminal; buses leave from Calama town, about 7 km away.

Because the van is shared, it waits for passengers from your flight and others landing close to it before leaving. Reports put departure at about 30 to 50 minutes after landing, and the van then drops passengers one by one around San Pedro. Our shared transfers page covers the waiting, stops and luggage rules in detail.

The airport counters

Three transfer companies are on the airport’s official list of services: Transfer Altiplánico, Transfer Pampa and Transvip. You pass their counters right after baggage claim. All three sell shared seats to San Pedro at the airport’s published fare of CLP 17,900 per person, and shorter shared runs into Calama itself from CLP 7,000 to CLP 10,000 per person depending on the area.

Buying at the counter works well when you land in the middle of the day and do not mind a short wait. Pay attention at the edges of the day. Shared runs are built around flights landing roughly between 6:40 am and 9:00 pm, and in the high season some operators add a single late run for flights landing until about 11:00 pm, which may wait a long time to fill. You may see other company names in older guides; stick to the three counters on the airport’s list. Our Calama Airport guide shows what else is in the terminal.

Pre-booking the shuttle

The Ruta Chile Calama Airport transfer is the shuttle we recommend booking ahead. Of the four Calama Airport transfers we found on GetYourGuide it has the most reviews, 814 rated 4.6. It costs $29.90 per person in either direction, includes one suitcase and one carry-on per person, and the driver waits by the exit door with a card showing your name. Our Ruta Chile breakdown covers it in full.

Pre-booking costs a little more than the counter, and it buys you three things. Your seat is fixed before you fly. The operator has your flight number, so a delay does not leave you stranded. And you can cancel free of charge up to 24 hours before. The return is also simpler: the airport’s published fares cover rides leaving the terminal, and the trip back from San Pedro needs a booking anyway. Ruta Chile’s shared round trip was $56 per person when we checked; see our round-trip transfers page.

When a shuttle is the wrong choice

For four or more people the shuttle loses its price advantage. Four counter seats cost CLP 71,600, close to the CLP 75,000 an authorized airport taxi charges for the whole car, so compare with the Calama Airport taxi if your group and luggage fit in one car. If you land after 9:00 pm, carry bulky gear or want to leave straight away, a private transfer suits you better.

Practical tips

  • Withdraw Chilean pesos at the terminal ATMs before you queue at a counter.
  • Send your flight number when you pre-book, so the operator can track delays.
  • Keep to one suitcase and one carry-on per person on shared vans.
  • If you are staying outside the town center, give the full address and ask whether the van reaches your door.
  • Use the bathroom in the terminal; there are no towns or fuel stops on Route 23.

Quick recommendations

  • If you land at midday and travel light → buy a seat at any of the three counters.
  • If you land late afternoon or evening, or want your seat guaranteed → pre-book the Ruta Chile shuttle.
  • If you need the return to the airport too → book the round trip.
  • If you are four or more → check the taxi fare first.
  • If you are going into Calama town, not San Pedro → the counters sell shorter shared runs from CLP 7,000.

"excellent dependable and quality ride... (thats a bettet review than I gave miss world)"

Dean United Arab Emirates

"Collected from the arrivals hall with my name on a board, waited a few minutes for the other passenger and off we went! Seamless journey after a lot of travel"

Elena United Kingdom

"Booked a transfer from San Pedro to Calama airport. Communication was great and I was given a clear pickup window - they were punctual and got me to the airport in good time. Smooth journey and efficient service. Having done this by public bus a week before and had a not-so-great experience, this was much better for my stress levels when I had a flight to get!"

Sam United Kingdom

"Booked the round trip service. Communicated very far in advance for the pick up at Calama airport and was standing at the exit with a sign listing the names of all passengers that had booked with the transfer, then sorted us into groups and had us on the vans. Very efficient. Return transfer communication was not until 12 hours before our pickup time (early the next morning), but had all our information. Pick up was very early (get you to airport with 2 hours prior to boarding, which is not really necessary at such a small airport). However, met us at our hotel and even knocked on the door when ready to get us from the lobby. Drivers were fast and got us to our destination quickly. Buses are clean and modern, though limited leg room. An uber is probably cheaper if you are more than one person, but having this booked in advance gave good peace of mind."

Baily United States

"The trip was professional, safe and comfortable. Door to door service."

Hilary Jane Australia

"Efficient transfer to/from the airport, punctual, good communication, decent value, comfy vehicles. Good option for getting out to San Pedro"

"The whole process was very smooth, from being met at the airport to arriving at my lodging."

Beth United States

"Smooth pickup. All other passengers were from the same flight, so we didn't wait too much. Hotel drop-off. Good communication throughout. 5 stars."
