Your Arrival, Step by Step

What happens between touching down at El Loa and reaching your hotel.

  1. Before you fly

Book and send your flight number, date and time, plus your hotel in San Pedro. Save the operator's phone number.

  2. Collect your bags

El Loa has one small terminal and only domestic flights, so you go straight from the plane to baggage claim.

  3. Find your name at the exit

Walk out past the counters. The driver waits by the exit door with a card showing your name.

  4. Ride to your hotel

About 100 km and roughly 1 hour 30 minutes of driving later you are in San Pedro, with stops for other passengers on a shared van.

Three Ways to Leave Arrivals

Pre-booked shared, pre-booked private, or a seat bought at the counter.

Arrivals Guide

What Happens When You Land at Calama

Baggage, meeting your driver, the transfer and the drop-off, in the order you will do them.

Arriving at Calama’s El Loa Airport is simple: one small terminal, domestic flights only, no passport control. Collect your bags, walk past the three transfer counters and out of the exit, where a pre-booked driver waits with your name on a card. From there it is about 100 km and roughly 1 hour 30 minutes of driving to San Pedro de Atacama, longer on a shared van that stops at several hotels.

Before you fly: what to send

The smooth arrivals are prepared before take-off. Whichever transfer you book, send the operator your flight number, arrival date and time, and the name and address of your hotel in San Pedro. The DMC Latam shared transfer asks for these by email or WhatsApp, and the Ruta Chile private transfer also asks for a contact cell phone number. With your flight number, a delay becomes the operator’s problem.

Withdraw some pesos when you land, as you may want cash for the counters, a taxi or a tip.

Baggage claim and the counters

El Loa handles domestic flights only, so international visitors have already cleared immigration and customs at their entry airport, normally Santiago. You walk from the plane straight to baggage claim. The terminal is small, but bags take as long as the flight’s unloading, so do not promise anyone an exact time.

Right after baggage claim you pass the counters of the three official transfer companies: Transfer Altiplánico, Transfer Pampa and Transvip. If you have not booked, this is where you buy a shared seat at the airport’s published fare of CLP 17,900 per person (from 1 April 2026). The terminal also has ATMs for pesos, Wi-Fi and a restaurant in the public hall. Our Calama Airport guide covers the facilities.

Meeting your driver

On the Ruta Chile Calama Airport transfer the driver waits by the exit door with a card showing your name. The Ruta Chile private transfer uses the same system at the airport exit. If you do not see your name, wait near the exit door and call the operator: some drivers speak little or no English, so a phone call through the office solves most mix-ups. Read our Ruta Chile breakdown for the full meeting instructions.

The Ruta Chile transfer cost $29.90 per person one way when we checked on 3 October 2026, rated 4.6 from 814 reviews, and includes one suitcase and one carry-on per person.

The wait and the ride

A private transfer or taxi leaves as soon as you are in. A shared van often waits 30 to 50 minutes so it can carry passengers from more than one flight. Then it is Route 23: straight across the desert, over a pass of about 3,400 m and down to San Pedro at about 2,400 m. Our travel time guide has door-to-door times by mode.

Drop-off in San Pedro

Shared vans drop each party in turn. Hotels in the town center are straightforward. Lodging farther out may be served from a set meeting point by shared operators, so check your booking and send your exact address. A taxi or private transfer goes to the door. If you are still choosing a base, see where to stay in San Pedro de Atacama.

Your first afternoon

Arriving from Santiago, near sea level, you climb to about 2,400 m in a few hours. Drink water, eat lightly and keep the first afternoon for a walk around town. Save the high-altitude trips, such as the El Tatio geysers, for later in your stay; our things to do page suggests an order.

Landing late

The terminal is open 24 hours, but shared counter departures thin out in the evening. In high season some operators run a single shared departure for flights landing between about 9 and 11 pm. If your flight lands late, pre-book a seat or a private transfer before you fly, and send your flight number so a delay is covered. See private transfers.

Practical tips

  • Take pesos from the airport ATMs. The airport does not list an exchange office.
  • Pack within one suitcase and one carry-on per person for shared vans, or declare extra bags when you book.
  • Keep the operator’s phone number on paper as well as on your phone.
  • Drink water and take the first afternoon slowly at San Pedro’s altitude.
  • Ride-hailing is reported to be unreliable here; use the authorized taxis if your plans fall through.

"Collected from the arrivals hall with my name on a board, waited a few minutes for the other passenger and off we went! Seamless journey after a lot of travel"

Elena United Kingdom

"Booked a transfer from San Pedro to Calama airport. Communication was great and I was given a clear pickup window - they were punctual and got me to the airport in good time. Smooth journey and efficient service. Having done this by public bus a week before and had a not-so-great experience, this was much better for my stress levels when I had a flight to get!"

Sam United Kingdom

"Booked the round trip service. Communicated very far in advance for the pick up at Calama airport and was standing at the exit with a sign listing the names of all passengers that had booked with the transfer, then sorted us into groups and had us on the vans. Very efficient. Return transfer communication was not until 12 hours before our pickup time (early the next morning), but had all our information. Pick up was very early (get you to airport with 2 hours prior to boarding, which is not really necessary at such a small airport). However, met us at our hotel and even knocked on the door when ready to get us from the lobby. Drivers were fast and got us to our destination quickly. Buses are clean and modern, though limited leg room. An uber is probably cheaper if you are more than one person, but having this booked in advance gave good peace of mind."
