Stargazing Guide

Stargazing Tours in the Atacama

Which tour, which night of the month, and how it fits around your arrival from Calama.

A stargazing tour from San Pedro de Atacama is a night out of about 2.5 hours: a van ride of about 15 minutes to a dark site outside town, a guided tour of the sky by eye, then the telescopes. The Llama Stargazing experience costs from $33 per person and is rated 4.7 from 784 reviews. Book a night near the new moon if you can.

What actually happens on the night

You meet at the set point for your option in San Pedro and ride a van for about 15 minutes to the observation site. The guide starts with a naked-eye tour of the southern sky and the stories of the constellations, then moves you to the telescopes and shows you how to use them. Depending on the season, the targets include planets, double stars, star clusters, nebulae and galaxies.

Toward the end the guide takes photos of you with the stars behind you, and the night closes with red wine, pisco sour or juice, plus tea, coffee or hot chocolate and a snack. Blankets are provided. There is no bathroom at the site, so plan for that before you leave town. Drop-off is in town, including Ignacio Carrera Pinto 530. Read our breakdown of the Llama Stargazing tour for the full detail.

Guides speak English, Spanish, Italian or German, so check the language when you book. The tour is not suitable for children under 4 or for people over 80.

Picking your night: the moon and the weather

The moon decides more than anything else. Near the new moon the sky is darkest and the Milky Way is easy to see. Near the full moon, faint stars wash out. Llama Stargazing runs two options for that reason: the standard stargazing tour for darker nights, and the Astrolunar tour, which turns the telescopes on the moon and planets, still sharp when the Milky Way is gone.

Check a lunar calendar before you choose the night, and keep a spare night later in your stay if you can. January and February bring the altiplanic winter, with more cloud and storms. If the weather cancels a tour, ask the operator to reschedule or refund; on GetYourGuide you also have free cancellation up to 24 hours before.

Fitting it around your arrival from Calama

Stargazing is one of the few things you can do on your first night. The observation site is a short drive from town, so there is no extra climb in altitude, and the tour starts after dark, leaving you the afternoon to arrive. If you land at Calama around midday, a transfer to San Pedro takes about 1 hour 30 minutes on the road, which leaves time to check in, eat and walk to the meeting point.

If you would like the night arranged with everything else, the 3 Perfect Days in Atacama + Airport Transfer package puts an astronomy tour on day one, from 9 to 11:30 p.m., after the shared transfer from Calama Airport. It also covers Baltinache, Moon Valley and El Tatio for $280 per person when we checked on 3 October 2026, without accommodation or park fees. Our Atacama tours with airport transfer page compares the packages.

Because the tour meets in town, a central hotel makes the walk there and back simple. See where to stay in San Pedro.

Sunset first, stars after

A good pairing is an afternoon in Valle de la Luna, then the stars the same night. The Whipala Valle de la Luna shared tour returns to the town center after sunset. Our Valle de la Luna tours page covers entry tickets and the October 2026 closures. Leave the dawn trips to El Tatio for a night when you have not been out late.

Observatories and ALMA

Many visitors hope to see the big observatories. ALMA’s public visit program is currently suspended, with no reopening date. The night tours around San Pedro are where you put your eye to a telescope. If you want to compare every stargazing tour in town, from shared groups to private nights, our sister site Atacama Stargazing Tour covers them in depth.

Practical tips

  • Dress for the cold. Nights near or below freezing are normal from June to August, even with the blankets.
  • Bring Chilean pesos from Calama if you want to tip; tips are not included.
  • Use a bathroom in town before the meeting time; there is none at the observation site.
  • Skip alcohol on your first two nights at altitude if you can. The tour’s wine can wait for a later night.
  • Keep your camera settings simple; the guide takes the photo with the stars for you.

Quick recommendations

  • If you have one night → book Llama Stargazing on the night closest to the new moon.
  • If the moon is full during your stay → choose the Astrolunar option.
  • If you want everything planned from the airport → book 3 Perfect Days in Atacama + Airport Transfer.
  • If you want to compare many stargazing operators → visit our sister site, then come back for your Calama transfer.

"Really good experience, instructions for pick-up were clear, driver was good, he even waited 15 mins for 2 guests who were lost, went back to pick them up later. The stargazing was lovely, the guide was really knowledgeable and explained things clearly. I would suggest to show the constellations on an iPad or something to help guests being able to see them more clearly on the sky. They also took two photos of guests and sent them via email a few days later along with some lovely photos of different objects on the sky. We looked terrible on our photos though, it's a shame they don't let you retake them. They also had some drinks which was a nice touch. Overall very well organised and great experience, we learned a lot. Totally recommended!"

"Luca is just fantastic !! so much info, such a competent person!!"

Gabriel Italy

"Loved it. My favourite tour I did in San Pedro. Magical!"

Ellen United Kingdom

"Great tour! The tour is geared towards beginners in astronomy and star gazing, so expect a lot of basic knowledge being explained. Overall a great experience, can only recommend! Suggestion for improved experience; *Download "Star Walk 2" - A free app that shows you the constellations in the sky realtime! *In camera settings increase/maximise exposure - Your pictures will have much better clarity. The stars and nebulae will be clearer than what you can see with your own eyes! Furthermore; The astronomer uses a laser pointer to point out constellations. I went in winter/ 12 june. It got very cold, however blankets and wine + snacks are provided."

Toke Denmark

"An excellent tour - I would highly recommend. The views were incredible. The guide spoke excellent English and was really well informed. We also got to look through different telescopes and had a photograph taken. The provision of complementary snacks and drinks at both the beginning and end of the experience was a really nice touch, as was the campfire. It is very cold - they give you blankets but bring all the layers you have!"
