Shared or Private Transfer: Which Should You Choose?

  • You are traveling alone or as a couple
  • You want the lowest straightforward transfer price, about $30 per person
  • You don't mind sharing the van with other passengers

Distance and journey time: Chile Travel, the official Chilean tourism site.

Most visitors flying to San Pedro de Atacama land at El Loa Airport in Calama and continue overland across the desert. You can make the journey by transfer, bus or private vehicle, but a pre-booked airport transfer is the simplest door-to-door option for most arrivals. Your driver is waiting when you walk out of arrivals, and you are dropped at your accommodation in San Pedro about an hour and a half later.

The drive from El Loa to San Pedro

El Loa Airport (CJC) sits about 6 km southeast of Calama, a mining city of the Atacama Desert. From the terminal the road skirts the city and heads east on Route 23, climbing gently across open desert and the Cordillera de la Sal before dropping into the oasis of San Pedro, which lies at about 2,400 m. The whole trip is about 100 km and normally takes about 1 hour 30 minutes, which is the figure Chile’s official tourism site gives too.

There is not much in between, and that is the point of booking ahead. The road is long, mostly unlit, and shared with heavy trucks serving the copper mines. The government is also upgrading a stretch of Route 23 close to San Pedro, with works running through 2026 and into 2027, so allow a little extra time if you are heading the other way to catch a flight.

Shared or private: what you are really choosing

A shared transfer puts you in a van with other passengers from your flight or a flight landing soon after. It is the lowest straightforward price for one or two people: the two shared transfers we compare above both cost $29.90 to $29.99 per person one way on GetYourGuide when we checked on 3 October 2026, and round trips cost $56 and $59.99. The trade-off is waiting. Shared vans often leave 30 to 50 minutes after landing so they can fill up, and they make several stops around San Pedro.

A private transfer is a vehicle just for your party. The Ruta Chile private transfer cost $95 per person from the airport and $89 per person in the other direction for two travelers when we checked. It pays off for families and groups, for anyone with a lot of luggage, and for late arrivals when not waiting matters most. Our pages on shared transfers and private transfers go into each in detail.

For most travelers we recommend the Ruta Chile Calama Airport transfer. Of the four Calama Airport transfers we found on GetYourGuide it has by far the most reviews (814, rated 4.6), one suitcase and one carry-on per person are included, and the driver waits at the exit door with a card showing your name. The DMC Latam shared transfer, rated 4.6 from 315 reviews, is an equally good shared option at almost the same price. Our breakdowns of the Ruta Chile transfer and the DMC Latam transfer list everything each one includes.

Booking ahead or at the airport counter

You do not have to book in advance. Three companies have transfer counters in the El Loa terminal right after baggage claim: Transfer Altiplánico, Transfer Pampa and Transvip. From 1 April 2026 the airport’s published fare for a shared transfer to San Pedro is CLP 17,900 per person, and an authorized taxi is CLP 75,000 per car.

That walk-up fare is lower than the online price, so why book ahead? A booking fixes your seat before you fly, the operator has your flight number and tracks delays, and you can cancel free of charge up to 24 hours before. It matters most at the edges of the day. Late-evening counter shuttles are limited, and in the busy season some run a single shared departure for flights landing between 9 and 11 pm. If you land late, travel with children, or simply want to walk out of arrivals and find your name on a card, the extra few dollars buy certainty. If you are flexible and arriving at midday, the counter works fine. Our Calama Airport transfer cost guide lays out every price side by side.

Buses, taxis and hire cars

There is no public bus from the airport to San Pedro. Buses run by companies such as Frontera del Norte and Atacama 2000 leave from terminals in Calama town, about 7 km from the airport, cost CLP 7,000 one way and take about 1 hour 30 minutes. That makes them the cheapest option on paper, but only once you have paid a taxi from the airport into town.

Taxis are convenient and fixed-price, and for three or four people sharing one car the per-person cost comes close to a shared transfer. Hire cars are on the counter list too, with eight companies in the terminal. They make sense if you plan to explore on your own, but the big excursions climb above 4,000 m on long dirt roads, so most visitors leave the driving to tour operators. See transfer vs taxi and transfer vs bus for the full comparisons.

Planning the return to Calama

The drive back takes the same hour and a half, and airlines ask you to be at the airport well before departure, so operators usually collect you about three hours before your flight. Book the return when you book the arrival: both transfers above sell round trips, and our guide to leaving San Pedro for Calama Airport covers flight timing and pickup windows.

After you arrive

San Pedro sits at about 2,400 m, so take the first day slowly. Start with the lower excursions such as Valle de la Luna and leave the dawn trip to the El Tatio geysers, at about 4,320 m, for later in your stay. Check our guide to where to stay in San Pedro de Atacama before you book a room: tour pickups cover the town center, but not always the outlying areas.

How Your Airport Transfer Works

From the baggage belt at El Loa to the door of your San Pedro accommodation.

  1. Book and Send Your Flight

Choose a shared or private transfer, then send the operator your flight number, arrival time and San Pedro address, as every listing asks.

  2. Meet Your Driver

Collect your bags and walk out through the arrivals exit at El Loa. Follow the meeting instructions on your booking; most drivers hold a name sign.

  3. Cross the Desert to San Pedro

The drive is about 100 km on Route 23 and normally takes about an hour and a half. Shared vans may wait for other passengers first.

  4. Arrive at Your Accommodation

Drop-off is usually at your address in San Pedro. Places outside the town center may need a set meeting point, so check your booking.

Where to Stay

Staying in San Pedro? Book Your Hotel Too

Most travelers landing at Calama sleep in San Pedro de Atacama, the desert town that every Moon Valley, El Tatio and lagoon tour leaves from. Without a car, staying close to the center keeps restaurants, tour offices and pickup points within walking distance.

Central San Pedro

Best for a first visit and for travelers without a car. Restaurants, shops, tour offices and meeting points are a short walk away, and tour pickups cover the whole center.

Just outside the center

Quieter nights and more space while staying close to town. Check that your tours collect this far out: several operators only pick up inside the urban area.

Desert lodges and resorts

For travelers who want the accommodation to be part of the trip: pools, grounds and guided excursions, a short drive from the plaza.

Dean United Arab Emirates

"Collected from the arrivals hall with my name on a board, waited a few minutes for the other passenger and off we went! Seamless journey after a lot of travel"

Elena United Kingdom

"Booked a transfer from San Pedro to Calama airport. Communication was great and I was given a clear pickup window - they were punctual and got me to the airport in good time. Smooth journey and efficient service. Having done this by public bus a week before and had a not-so-great experience, this was much better for my stress levels when I had a flight to get!"

Sam United Kingdom

"Booked the round trip service. Communicated very far in advance for the pick up at Calama airport and was standing at the exit with a sign listing the names of all passengers that had booked with the transfer, then sorted us into groups and had us on the vans. Very efficient. Return transfer communication was not until 12 hours before our pickup time (early the next morning), but had all our information. Pick up was very early (get you to airport with 2 hours prior to boarding, which is not really necessary at such a small airport). However, met us at our hotel and even knocked on the door when ready to get us from the lobby. Drivers were fast and got us to our destination quickly. Buses are clean and modern, though limited leg room. An uber is probably cheaper if you are more than one person, but having this booked in advance gave good peace of mind."

Baily United States

"The trip was professional, safe and comfortable. Door to door service."

Hilary Jane Australia

"Efficient transfer to/from the airport, punctual, good communication, decent value, comfy vehicles. Good option for getting out to San Pedro"

"Smooth pickup. All other passengers were from the same flight, so we didn't wait too much. Hotel drop-off. Good communication throughout. 5 stars."
